To use this feature you have to follow the following steps:
- Go to your Account Settings page and select the Change option next to Account Security.
- Check the box under Login Approvals. If you don’t have a mobile phone number linked to your Facebook account, you will need to add one. Follow the steps provided when you check the box to turn on Login Approvals.
- If you are haven't named the device you are on, you will be prompted to do so when you turn on Login Approvals. Do not click the "Save this device" option if you are using a public device (e.g., a friend’s phone, a library computer). Note that all of the devices linked to your Facebook account (e.g., your recognized devices) are listed under the Login Approvals section.(Facebook help center)
Login approvals is a Two Factor Authentication system that requires you to enter a code send by Facebook to your mobile phone via text message whenever you log into Facebook from a new or unrecognized computer. Once you have entered this security code, you’ll have the option to save the device to your account so that you don’t see this challenge on future logins.
If your account will be accessed from unrecognized device, you'll be notified upon your next login and asked to verify the attempted account access. If you don’t recognize this login, you'll be able to change your password with the knowledge that while some one else may have known your login credentials, they were unable to access your account and cause any harm.
If you ever lose or forget your phone and have login approvals turned on, you will still have the option to authorize your login provided you are accessing your account from a saved device.
